Origins of Tapas:
Cold or warm, the most traditional and perfect of the most imaginative innovations, tapas are more substantial than appetizers, without being really full meals. Tapas are served on medium-sized plates and they offer a multitude of combinations and Spanish specialties. These appetizers are so successful because they can serve as a complete meal.

What are tapas?
There are several versions or legends concerning the origin of tapas. One of the most well-known makes reference to the Middle Ages, during Alfonso's X el Sabio's reign in the XIIIth century. It is said that when the King was sick he was prescribed wine and to avoid the effects of alcohol on an empty stomach, he took appetizers to accompany the drink. After returning to good health, he decided that, in the castles of Castile, wine must be suitably accompanied by a ration of food so that consumers would be less affected by the effects of the alcohol. It must not be forgotten that the word 'tapa' originally meant a small plate that was put on the glass in the old days, forming thus a lid (tapar means "to cover" in Spanish).
The place mat
Customers immediately discover on the place mat pleasant pictures of the tapas on offer and already a sensation of foretaste. The creative and attractive illustrations of the place mat presents fifty photographs of tapas - "an image is worth a thousand words" - and the detailed explanation of every dish results in faster sales. Created in association with a dietitian, these new combinations were finalized with inspiration from the same core of the Mediterranean diet. Each dish consists of eight fruit and vegetables accompanied by fish/seafood or meat, all of which is presented on a large plate. Each dish is presented through its own photograph and detailed description concerning its ingredients.
